COMMITMENT

A healthy urban forest evolves as a result of thoughtful planning, careful implementation and proper maintenance.  The trees around homes and businesses and the trees in city and county parks form the matrix of the urban forest.  Both homeowners and tree care professionals have the opportunity and the responsibility to share in the conservation and management of this natural resource.  Cared for properly, trees provide many benefits:

  • Quality of Life - Reduce noise and provide privacy and screening.  Create a better environment for recreation and relaxation.  Enhance worker productivity.
  • Air Pollution Control - Tree leaves filter the air we breathe by removing dust and other particulates.  An average-sized tree produces enough oxygen in one year for a family of four.
  • Economics - The shade from trees strategically placed around buildings can cut air conditioning costs up to 50% and block the wind to lower heating costs.  Houses surrounded by trees sell for 18-25% higher than houses with no trees.  Consumers surveyed said they would spend up to 13% more at businesses that have trees in their landscape.
  • Groundwater Replacement - Falling and running water is trapped by trees, causing it to sink into the soil to replenish underground drinking water supplies.
  • Environmental Impact - Trees next to streams keep the water cool for fish and other creatures.
  • Storm Water Runoff - The nation's urban trees soak up water and provide $400 billion dollars worth of storm water management.
  • Prevent Flooding - Trees intercept water and reduce storm runoff and the possibility of flooding.  They prevent erosion on slopes.
  • Health - Hospital patients heal faster, use fewer pain medications and spend 8% fewer days in the hospital when they have a view of trees.
  • Wildlife - Trees provide food and shelter for wildlife.  Groves of trees provide habitat for larger mammals.  Dead tree snags provide natural habitat for birds, squirrels and other animals to live, feed and nest.
  • Climate Control - Water evaporating from leaves cools the tree and the air around it providing comfort and a reduction in global warming.  On a hot day, one large tree in full leaf transpires several hundred gallons of water into the air, cooling the same amount as 6 room-sized air conditioners.

Four Seasons Tree Care demonstrates it's commitment to the long-term health and sustainability of the urban forest in several ways:

  • TREE PLANTINGS - We partner with American Forests and the National Arbor Day Foundation to arrange for the planting of trees on public lands in cities and natural areas in our own community, across the country and around the world.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Aware that it isn't just what we do that has an impact on the communities we serve but how we do it, we're always trying to find better, safer ways to do our job.  Both as a company and as a member of an industry that shares in the responsibility to steward the environment, we acknowledge that what we do has long-term implications for the community and the urban ecosystem.

Biodiesel

In keeping with our role as stewards of the environment, we have made the commitment to use biodiesel in all our diesel engines.  Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel which is non-toxic, free from sulfur and aromatics and 100% biodegradable.  It has numerous environmental and health benefits including it:

  • is less toxic than table salt and degrades as fast as sugar
  • is made from 100% renewable resources such as soybeans
  • is produced domestically so it decreases our dependence on foreign oil and contributes to our own economy
  • makes far fewer harmful emissions such as carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons and particulate matter
  • reduces net carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 80%, helping to mitigate global warming
  • shows an 85% reduction in potential cancer causing agents found in petroleum diesel
  • is the first and only alternative fuel to have completed the rigorous Health Effects testing requirements of the Clean Air Act

On a more personal level we have found that the foul odor and black smoke normally associated with the use of diesel engines is virtually eliminated with biodiesel.  In addition to being more worker-friendly, the use of biodiesel makes the presence of our trucks and other equipment in the community less invasive.

Greenplus

Greenplus products are vegetable-based environmentally safe lubricants that are rapidly biodegradable and made from renewable resources.  They are non-toxic to the environment and safe for operators and mechanics.  We use Greenplus Chainsaw Bar Oil ES for lubricating our saws because of its rapid biodegradability and because it doesn't make a rainbow sheen on water surfaces when used near ponds and streams.
